Benefits of Brilliant Braiders Series
Hair braiding is not just a beautiful art form, but also a highly mathematical practice that is often overlooked in schools. By learning how to create tessellations box braids and symmetrical patterns with cornrows, girls can draw connections in their understanding of mathematics. This is a great opportunity to celebrate the African roots of hair braiding and its significance in the diaspora.
Sister circles are a powerful way for girls to come together and support each other. In these safe spaces, they can discuss and reflect on their personal journeys, and develop a collective responsibility for one another. The sisterhood is a source of strength and support, empowering each member to learn and grow.
Visual Spacial Awareness
Great visual spatial awareness is a valuable skill that can be developed through various activities, including math exercises. Hairstylists, mathematicians, and engineers alike use this skill to create beautiful braided styles and solve complex problems. With specific math and hair braiding activities, girls can expand their relationship with math.
The Beauty and Wonder of Mathematics
Mathematics is a beautiful subject that is all about patterns and how ideas are connected. Mathematics is found in nature where we pay attention to it to learn about ourselves and the world around us. It has been viewed as such since the beginning of time in Africa. With this approach, girls can develop a positive relationship with math and practice it in a supportive community, in sisterhood.
